LIVING IN WALLA WALLA:

Both located just blocks from the downtown area, Whitman's campus and Courtyard by Marriott feature dining options ranging from casual fast-food to mid-priced luncheons and cafes to higher-end restaurants. Since the city is quite small, many amenities are within a short walk for most people. Public transportation and/or bicycles (rentals available near campus at Whitman's Physical Plant; eight bicycles available on first-come, first-serve basis) make a greater number of food trucks, sandwich shops, and other eateries reasonably accessible.

Please remember that the $2,100 stipend is taxable and intended to defray but not cover all expenses required for attending the Institute.

Whitman will offer participants borrowing privileges in Penrose Library, wi-fi access, and fitness center passes for the duration of their stay. All books and required readings will be mailed to participants or, when appropriate, posted to the website well in advance of the Institute's beginning.

Institute faculty will orient Summer Scholars to the College's Northwest Collections and the library's other resources, though applicants should realize that programming may not afford extended research time in the archives.

Please note that the library and fitness center will operate on limited, summer hours. Penrose Library is open from 9 am to 5 pm, Monday through Friday. The Baker Ferguson Fitness Center will announce its summer hours sometime in May, 2018: these depend upon the availability of staff, which changes from year to year.
